There are a few tips and tricks you can use to keep the extra Thanksgiving weight off, and you can still enjoy all the holiday treats.
1 – Load up on vegetables first. Fill your plate up first with green beans casserole, sweet potatoes and carrots before you add mashed potatoes, stuffing the turkey. This way you can eat the healthier vegetables, which are lower in calories, lower in carbohydrates and much healthier for you. Just don’t overload on the creamy sauces or candied marshmallows.
2 – Don’t starve yourself all day. If you are like me and eat Thanksgiving dinner around two o’clock in the afternoon, you want sure you eat a healthy breakfast. This will increase your metabolism and lower your desire to overeat at dinner. If you eat dinner around five or six o’clock in the evening, you want to make sure you have breakfast and lunch.
3 – Choose a fruit-based dessert. Too often at Thanksgiving we see desserts that are cookies, pies or pastries. It’s completely unreasonable to say skip dessert altogether, so you should focus on the healthiest desserts. Choose ones that are mostly fruit or ones that have the least sugar. Avoid any desserts that are made with chemical sweeteners, artificial flavors or anything that would come out of the science experiment.
4 – Take a walk. When you are finished eating dinner and dessert, take a 15 minute walk. This can be as simple as walking around the block or taking a nice stroll through the forest. The main reason to take a walk is to fight off the sleepiness and to help your digestive system properly digest all the food you just ate. It will help drive up your metabolism so all the extra stuff in you ate doesn’t go right to your hips.
5 – Choose leftovers carefully. The majority of leftovers are usually turkey, stuffing and potatoes. While these are tasty smothered in gravy, they don’t do much for your waistline. When you take leftovers, make sure you’re getting at least an equal amount of vegetables with that. That could mean making extra vegetables for Thanksgiving dinner, or adding them right from your freezer to your leftovers.
6-Use essential oils. Some people find that using essential oils can help curb their appetite. Floral aromas have been shown to help with the psychological and physiological mechanisms associated with eating habits. Many people will put the oils in a diffuser (compare popular diffusers here) which will help everyone not over eat.
Most Thanksgiving dinners will contain foods that are high carbohydrate and lower nutritional value. You have the ability to choose the healthier foods. If you want to keep your waistline small this Thanksgiving, it’s your responsibility to choose the healthier foods.
