Experiential Workshops
Transformational workshops take us out of our daily lives, bring us to a safe place where we heal and grow, and then bring us gently back to our relationships and routines with a whole new perspective.
The human potential for transformation is vast. Your potential is vast. But it is not easy to become something greater than we imagine ourselves to be. It takes courage; it takes a willingness to look at ourselves with the eyes of love; and it happens when we are ready to let go of fear and limitations.
A transformational workshop is like a womb. The workshop is safe and nourishing. It provides all you need to grow and become something new. But the growth is natural; it comes from inside of you.
I hope, as you read this page, you will relax around a few common concerns about workshops.
Are experiential workshops right for everyone? Are they right for me?
How do I know if I am ready?
What makes a workshop safe?
What makes a workshop effective?
How can I get the most from a workshop?
How can I give the most to a workshop?
Are Experiential Workshops Right for Everyone?
Anyone can benefit from an experiential workshop. However, that doesn't mean that every workshop is right for every person. In choosing workshops, we need to ask if the workshop is a good match for me. Will it give me what I want? Am I open to its potential? Is the time right for me?
The most important question to ask when we hear about a workshop is, how does it feel? The right growth opportunity at the right time feels strong and powerful. The feeling may be purely positive - a sense "I really want to do this." Often, though, it is a mixed feeling. If you feel a strong interest, and also some hesitation, or even fear, that can mean that the workshop is just right for you. If the workshop is right for you, it is an opportunity to change your life. And big changes often make us anxious.
How Do I Know if I am Ready?
Here's a hint: if you've just moved, changed jobs, and fallen in love, this may not be the best time to go to a workshop. The value of the workshop lies in being able to leave your life behind, and then come back and practice new habits. So if your life is totally overwhelming right now, it might be best to get your house in order, and then go.
But maybe not. Maybe you need a transformative workshop exactly because everything is overwhelming right now. Get away, refocus, and return empowered to make the changes you want in your life.
So, it comes down to: Is change essential in your life right now? If so, Go! Or, is change both desirable and realistic? If so, Go!
What Makes a Workshop Safe?
The organization that offers the workshop should do a great deal to make a safe environment. Safety in a workshop is more than just ensuring that there is no physical injury. Our feelings can be hurt, too. In fact, safety is important on all five of these levels: physical, emotional, mental, energetic, and spiritual.
Workshops should occur in an environment that is healthy for the body and the emotions. The workshop team should prepare for everything you might need. Loving attention should be available throughout. For larger workshops, assistants should be available to help people who have intense insights, spiritual or emotional breakthroughs, or just need a hug and time to cry.
When all of our needs are taken care of with loving awareness, we relax. Then we are ready to be challenged without falling into fear; we are ready to grow.
What Makes a Workshop Effective?
The facilitator is the second-most important factor in making sure that a workshop will bring transformation to your life. What matters most? Integrity. The facilitator should be someone who walks his talk in all ways. He or she must be someone who has been where you are and made the journey to where you want to be - maybe more than once. Only someone who has actually experienced transformation can share it.
How Can I Get the Most From a Workshop?
You are the most important factor in ensuring that you transform in, and after a workshop. During the workshop, openness is most important. A willingness to relax and open to the possibilities that you are much more wonderful, capable, adn powerful than you every imagined will let you stretch your wings and fly all the way home.
After the workshop, loving awareness and persistence are the most important qualities. Everyone talks about how birds must be pushed out of the nest to take their first flight. But the real challenge is flights #2 through #10 - stretching our wings when we want to put up our feet and turn on the TV; moving into new energy when old habits cry out to draw us back in to our old, more limited idea of who we are.
How Can I Give the Most To a Workshop?
When you ask this question, you are really ready. Transformation is about moving out of our limited selves, becoming more powerful, and more generous. When we ask how we can share in the workshop to maximize everyone's growth - including our own - we are really ready to give. And the more we give, the more we receive.
The true secret of the workshop experience is that what we are open to can happen, and what we are willing to do will happen. If we come ready to drop our fears, to open to ourselves and others, to see ourselves with the eyes of love and embrace others, then the transformation will be strong. Our own growth will be maximal. And the joy of being with another as he heals or she grows is a gift we carry with us for our entire lives.
